Terms of Service

These Terms of Service (“Terms”) govern your use of Kotoba Chan (the “Service”), a free study aid for Japanese kanji and vocabulary. By accessing or using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.

1. The Service

Kotoba Chan provides flashcards, quizzes, matching, and kanji-building drills to help you study Japanese vocabulary. The Service is provided free of charge for personal, non-commercial use. We may add, change, or remove features at any time.

2. Eligibility

You must be at least 13 years old (or the minimum age of digital consent in your country) to use the Service. By using it, you confirm that you meet this requirement.

3. Your account

Provide accurate information when you register, and keep it up to date.
You are responsible for keeping your login credentials secure and for all activity under your account.
Notify us promptly of any unauthorised use of your account.
You may delete your account at any time from Profile → Delete Account.

4. Acceptable use

When using the Service, you agree not to:

Break any applicable law, or infringe the rights of others.
Attempt to gain unauthorised access to the Service, other accounts, or our systems.
Interfere with or disrupt the Service, including probing, scanning, or overloading it.
Use bots, scrapers, or other automated means to access or harvest data at scale.
Reverse-engineer, copy, or resell the Service except as permitted by law.
Upload malicious code or content that is unlawful, harmful, or abusive.

5. Content and intellectual property

The Service’s software, design, and original content are owned by us or our licensors and are protected by intellectual-property laws. Any vocabulary data you import remains your responsibility, and you confirm you have the right to use it.

Kotoba Chan is an independent study aid and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to any textbook, publisher, or examination body. Product and textbook names are the property of their respective owners and are used only for identification and study reference.

6. Third-party services

The Service integrates third parties such as Google and Facebook (sign-in) and Google Analytics (usage measurement). Your use of those features is also subject to the respective provider’s terms and privacy policies. We are not responsible for third-party services.

7. Accuracy and study disclaimer

The Service is a learning aid provided for convenience. Readings, meanings, and translations may contain errors or omissions and are not guaranteed to be accurate or complete. The Service is not a substitute for official textbooks, courses, or examinations. Always verify important information with authoritative sources.

8. “As is” — no warranty

The Service is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, or uninterrupted availability. We do not warrant that the Service will be error-free or always accessible.

9. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, we will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, profits, or goodwill, arising from your use of (or inability to use) the Service. Because the Service is provided free of charge, our total liability to you is limited to the greatest extent the law allows.

10. Suspension and termination

We may suspend or terminate access to the Service, in whole or in part, at any time — including if you breach these Terms or misuse the Service. You may stop using the Service and delete your account at any time.

11. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date above. Your continued use of the Service after changes take effect means you accept the updated Terms.

12. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws applicable at the operator’s place of business, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Any disputes will be subject to the courts of that jurisdiction, unless mandatory local consumer-protection law provides otherwise.
